Madrid de los Austrias on foot: Plaza de la Villa → Calle Mayor → Plaza Mayor

A self-guided walking route through Habsburg Madrid — Plaza de la Villa, Calle Mayor and Plaza Mayor — with the history behind each stop and free audio for the full loop.

Madrid’s oldest quarter — the Madrid de los Austrias — packs four centuries of Habsburg history into a walk you can do in under two hours. This route links three of the quarter’s essential stops and explains what you’re looking at as you go.

Start: Plaza de la Villa

Tucked behind Calle Mayor, the Plaza de la Villa is the city’s original town hall square. Three buildings frame it: the 17th-century Casa de la Villa (the old ayuntamiento), the 16th-century Casa de los Lujanes — the oldest civil building on the square, where legend places the imprisoned French king Francis I after Pavia — and the Torre de los Lujanes in Gothic-Mudéjar brick.

Along Calle Mayor

Walk east along Calle Mayor, the medieval main street of the town. Look up as you go: the street retains its baroque facades, including the church of San Nicolás de los Servitas, one of the oldest towers in Madrid, and the facade of the Palacio de Santa Cruz, now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

End: Plaza Mayor

The route ends at the Plaza Mayor, built on the old Plaza del Arrabal at the eastern gate of the medieval town. Philip II moved the court’s market here in 1561; his son Philip III completed the square in 1619. Nine entrance arches pierce the uniform facades; the Casa de la Panadería anchors the north side. Bullfights, executions, canonisations and coronations have all happened in this square.

Walking it yourself

The loop is about 1.2 km and stays level the whole way. If you want the narration — street by street, with the stories the plaques leave out — the Old City Walk audio tour covers this exact route with GPS-triggered stops.

First 3 stops of the Old City Walk are free — no app download required beyond the web player.
